15 Month Check Up

We visited the doctor today for Emilia’s 15 month check up. It was fun to be able to walk in without a stroller and let Emilia lead the way. She was excited to see all the other kids at the pint sized play table and pointed to the aquarium and made her fish face for all the kids and fish to see. She kept busy in the waiting room while I checked her in at the desk.

We were called in by the nurse and led to our room where Emilia was measured and undressed for the scale.

Here are her 15 month stats. Such a little skinny mini!

Head: 18 inches (50th percentile)
Length: 31 ½ inches (50th percentile)
Weight: 20 pounds, 3 ounces (10th percentile)

The doctor came in and we talked about Emilia... We talked about her eating and sleeping habits. I asked if there was any reason to worry about her 10th percentile weight. The doctor explained that she is following an excellent curve for weight and there is no concern – especially since she is such a good eater. She is now just settling into her own genetic weight pattern...lucky girl!

We talked about her walking and running and stair climbing abilities and the doctor reported that she sounds like she is all caught up as far as gross motor development!

Then, the fun began... Before the doctor started to examine her, she explained that this is the age that kids remember their last experiences at the doctor...mainly the poking, prodding and shots... So when the doctor went through the routine of listening to her heart and lungs and looking into her eyes, ears and mouth, there was a lot of resistance. Emilia wanted to be sure we all knew she is a toddler now and has opinions about these things... Her wide open yelling mouth did give me and the doctor a nice view of her new molars though!

After our time with the doctor, the nurse came back in with a little something hiding in the pocket of the lab coat. We were initially able to distract Emilia with the funky purple gloves she was wearing, but as soon as we laid her back on the table, I got another view of those molars and big alligator tears started to form. It’s a good thing those nurses know what they are doing, because before she could even take a gasp of breath back in, the band aids were on and she was sitting back up wondering what the heck just happened!

We’ll be back this fall for a flu shot and again at 18 months for our next check up – but as long as we stay healthy, we won’t need to go back to the doctor for a while :) Phew!
