Sea Lion

Our first parent/child swim lesson was tonight at the YMCA and it was all kinds of splashing and fun! We are in the Sea Lion Class :)

Class Description: In this advanced water adjustment program, a certified instructor will guide parents in teaching body position, blowing bubbles, floating and fundamental safety and aquatic skills. Parents will accompany the child at all times during the class. Prerequisite: Comfortable in the water and walk 3 steps independently.

There were 8 kids and 8 parents ranging from 13 months to 2.5 years. It was nothing too over the top. Just standing in a circle to start and singing while splashing, clapping, spinning or bopping up and down – each kid got to choose something to do while we sang about being glad that "Emilia, Connor, Addison, etc. was here today....” We tried to work with the kids on entering the pool safely and waiting for you to say, “okay, ready” or “1,2,3” before stepping in... Emilia was in on “1” every time.

We put them on boogie board and walked them around to collect little toys that they needed to bring back to the treasure chest while encouraging them to kick. Emilia didn’t really understand the kicking thing, but that will come. We've got 6 more classes to work on it. She loved imitating me by putting her face in the water, trying to blow bubbles. Most of the water went into her mouth, so we'll need to focus on that next time too!

It was a fun 30 minutes and actually quite a little workout for me :) Especially having to try and shower and change her after class while I tried to shower and change myself! Mom's are just not given enough hands!
