Little Surprises

Emilia is learning so many new things lately, it's hard to keep up. It brings her AND us SO MUCH JOY when she gets to show us these things...

The latest...her ability to play GAMES! When we were visiting my parents in Marshfield, I played my first game of Memory with her. She was the best little game player...happy when someone else got a match, clapping with enthusiasm and patient while waiting for her turn.

I mentioned this "discovery" at daycare the other night and their response was "Yeah, that's one of the games we play here. We all clap for each other when someone gets a match." Ouch. One of the hardest things for me being a working mom is knowing that most of these exciting "firsts" are happening at daycare and I'm missing the real "first" time she does these things... I can still remember nannying / working at the Child Care Center and "keeping little secrets" about big milestones the kids were having so the parents could think that THEY were the first to witness these things... Now, I'm that parent and I wonder...what else am I missing out on? I need to just stop thinking about this now or my pregnant, hormonal self will be in the bathroom bawling in the handicap stall like I was last week after we missed out on a Craiglist find...

Okay - back to the bright side. Last night, Emilia pulled out her little MagnaDoodle and asked me, "What should we draw?" I replied, "A smiley face." She got to work with her back to me. I could hear her saying, "Two eyes and a mouth and a big head..." I expected her to whip around and show me a bunch of circular scribbles like she always draws...like the ones on ALL OF THE PAPERS SHE BRINGS HOME FROM DAYCARE... But, I'm pretty sure, this time...WE WERE THE FIRST TO SEE THIS!!!

Emilia's FIRST smiley face :) Overjoyed.

I know exactly how you feel - Sydney rolled over at daycare and while it was very thoughtful of our provider to take pictures when it happened - it's just not the same as being there. I too find it's best not to dwell on it. I think there are a lot of benefits to daycare and I choose to focus on those. :)

I agree! She is learning so much at daycare through all of the friendships she is forming. And her daycare providers are AMAZING! I just wish there was a way for me to work a little less...but doesn't everyone wish for that?

there are going to be pros and cons for everything and it's impossible to be there for EVERY first (even if you are a sahm)! but YOU are the one and only mamma, which is all that REALLY matters!

love her smiley face! and aren't games so much fun!?! elena's favorite is mickey mouse clubhouse "letters and numbers." it's kinda like a bingo deal. $10 at target. i think santa will be bringing more games to our house this year! ;)

I understand too. It is so hard to be a working mom. But I think we appreciate the kids even more because of it!
